MODULE 1:
CONTROL TACTICS FOR HIGH-RISK OPERATIONAL CONTEXTS
This Functional Edge module, which can be adapted to suit you or your organisation, covers the following:
Subject profiling and behaviours, including staff physical skill proficiency levels
Risk assessment of staff and surroundings, maintaining suitable training for specific operational skillsets, to ensure injury avoidance
Differentiation between the control phase and restraint phase
Recognition of the risks of sudden death during restraint, including positional asphyxia and excited delirium
Recommended approach positions, and methods to gain control fast
Dealing with assault behaviours during the control phase, typically over-hook and under-hook with extended or compressed frames
Restraint techniques including floor stabilisation, team tactics and punch protection
MODULE 2:
FUNCTIONAL EDGE SELF PROTECTION
This Functional Edge module, which can be adapted to suit you or your organisation, covers the following:
An explanation of the Nine Attitudes Model, and how this relates to dealing with self-protection
Tackling an assault, including fluid instinctive and continuous pressure drills
The use of the explosive shrug, extended and compressed protective behaviours
Dealing with bear hugs, headlocks, haymaker punches and tackles
Mental model training, which means recognising the pre-indicators of assault
How to apply natural defence mechanisms effectively, such as palms, forearms and elbows
MODULE 3:
FUNCTIONAL EDGE MASS ASSAULT
This Functional Edge module, which can be adapted to suit you or your organisation, covers the following:
An explanation of dealing with the paradox of a mass assault: more numbers mean more fists, but attackers can get into each other’s way
Identification of archetypes within the mass attack group, which helps to create successful exit strategies
Drills to enable recognition of adequate safe zoning to reduce personal risk
Basic and fluid framing drills to reduce any impact from a mass assault
Multiple assailant and chaos habituation training
Weaponise your natural instincts to take a proactive stance when dealing with the dangers of a mass attack
MODULE 4:
EDGED WEAPON SURVIVAL COURSE
This Functional Edge module, which can be adapted to suit you or your organisation, covers the following:
Issues in dealing with an edged weapon (the 5 paradoxes)
Suitable risk management, together with a good understanding of the duty of care to yourself and others
Understanding of reasonable force, as outlined in common and criminal law, in a knife assault
The mechanics of blade usage and the mitigation of damage
Use of physical skills, including the blade as a weapon of intimidation, the blade in motion, the concealed blade, and the compound assault with a blade
After-action issues, including basic first aid, PTSD, legal issues, and hospitalisation
